April 3, 2016 Easter 2 Year C
PART ONE: EXEGETICAL
1- the same day of Easter
2- community in fear, locked away
3- jesus appears: peace be with you
4- he forgave them and gives them the power to forgive (our community is founded on forgiveness)
5- as God sent me (the word became flesh) so I send you (the new body of Christ)
6- gave them the HS
7- Ah, about Thomas
- the other disciples didn't believe the women until they saw
- Thomas doesn't ask Jesus to see, Jesus shows
- Thomas was willing to die with Jesus earlier (John 11:16 "let us go that we may die with him")
- Thomas makes the ultimate declaration: my lord and my god
8- should be the end; seems like and feels like the end, but no manuscript has been found without next part; other miracles not listed ... like these that I'm about to list...odd
PART TWO: BEFORE AND AFTER
1- juxtaposition of gospel and acts
2- remember that they are afraid locked in a room (even after!) in John
3- compare to Acts "sorry dude gotta do this"
4- that is their change because of the resurrection: from fear to worth dying for
PART THREE: TO US
1- the gospel is vague as to what we are sent to do; on purpose!
2- (this is very important!) the scars are still there, resurrection does no erase the crucifixion
3- so, joining Jesus is not a fairy tale ending to our lives; pain doesn't just go away because we believe
4- but there are clues as to how to live better
5- "so that you might believe" in John belief is not a noun but always a verb
6- resurrection is promise of abundant life with God -- it was then and it is now
7- that's salvation for John: relationship with Jesus, with God here and now
8- the good news is you need not have seen Jesus to believe
9- how's your own relationship with Jesus and with God?
PART FOUR: REFLECTION
1- the question to us today is: what are you going to do next? Now that you believe?
2- our lives need to be different if we believe, they simply cannot remain the same
3- that's also where St. John's Church is, we have been given this chance: but now what?
4- redevelopment team, want to be a part?
